The last weekend in April means National Lacrosse League playoffs begin and a myriad of upset possibilities have popped up this year. Robin Ventura Jersey . Boston will be at Buffalo and Rochester will be in Toronto in single-game eliminations in the East, while Colorado goes to Calgary and Washington faces Minnesota in the West. Boston (8-8) finished fourth in the East after a 16-9 thumping of the first-place Bandits (10-5) in Buffalo last Saturday. The Blazers sat out one of their top scorers, Casey Powell, and still won decisively. The Bandits were awful. "We expect them to be a lot better when we meet in the playoffs," says Blazers forward Josh Sanderson. The big question today is: How is Dan Dawson? Bostons captain and leading point-getter hurt his right ankle when he fell after scoring at 6:44 of the third quarter and did not return to the game. "The leg is good," says Dawson. "I will be 100 per cent for the playoffs." It was a decision by the coaches to shut Dawson down in the last game, explains head coach Matt Sawyer. "If it was a game where we needed him, he could have continued, but we werent going to chance any further damage in that game," explains Sawyer. "Dan will get some therapy over the next two weeks and hell be playing, for sure, in the playoffs." With Dawson good to go and with the momentum of two straight wins, the Blazers will be a confident crew when they return to HSBC Arena. "Weve been a streaky team all year so were hoping were going into a hot streak," says Sanderson. The Boston-Buffalo playoff game is set for 7:30 p.m. ET on Saturday, April 30. The Bandits finish their schedule at home this Saturday against Rochester in a game with no standings ramifications. "Its a great test for us to prepare for the tough games ahead in the playoffs," says Bandits coach Darris Kilgour. "Well be resting some guys but that doesnt mean we wont be playing to win." The Rochester-Toronto showdown at 3:30 p.m. on Sunday, May 1, is another game that can be placed in the toss up category. Toronto swept its three-game season series with Rochester but that does not reflect the current status of the two teams because the Rock dropped their last three regular-season games to fall out of first at 10-6, while Rochester won four of five to improve to 9-6. Torontos defence has softened since Drew Petkoff blew out a knee and the Rock have slipped to No. 4 in goals-against average from No. 1 in the league. "I think losing Drew really hurt us but that is not the extent of it," says Rock captain Colin Doyle. "We need to regain our confidence at both ends of the rink." Torontos 3-0 series dominance can be thrown out the window. Both sides agree on that. "Theyve had our number so far this year but when it comes to playoff time its one game and whoever shows up on that day and outworks the other team is going to win," says Knighthawks forward Shawn Evans. "It should be a great game." Adds Doyle: "The season series with Rochester means nothing now. Simple as that. This is a new ballgame." Now we look to the West. Colorado is only 5-10 but it won two of the three games it played against Calgary this season including an 11-7 decision in Denver last Friday. The Roughnecks didnt use top players Dane Dobbie and Jeff Shattler in that one so the result, which left them at 11-5 but still first overall, was somewhat skewed. But the fourth-place Mammoth always play the Necks hard and are confident their upper hand in the season series is no fluke, especially since the trading deadline acquisitions of Joel Dalgarno and Gavin Prout. "Its almost as if adding Joel and Gavin to the offence helped the rest of us define our roles," says Mammoth forward Brian Langtry. "I feel recharged and much more confident than I did earlier in the season." The Roughnecks have announced that the playoff game is set for 8:30 p.m. ET, Saturday, April 30. Colorado finishes its schedule in Minnesota on Saturday. Nothing is at stake for the Mammoth but itll be a huge game for the Swarm since a win would create a tie 8-8 tie with the Washington Stealth in the standings, and the Swarm would get home floor against the defending champions in the following weekends playoff game because it won the season series. Minnesota hasnt had a home playoff date since 2008. Swarm forward Ryan Benesch could win the league scoring title. He needs seven points to overtake leader Lewis Ratcliff of the Stealth. "Theres all sorts of dynamics in play right now that are interesting," says Minnesota GM Marty ONeill. "All we can do is just focus in for 60 minutes on Saturday night, take care of that job and move on." The league announced its players of the week Wednesday and Bostons Kevin Buchanan got the nod as overall and offensive star after scoring five goals and assisting on four in the Blazers 16-9 win in Buffalo. Blazers defenceman Kyle Rubisch got the rookie mention after gathering in 10 loose balls. Colorado goalie Chris Levis got the defensive player honour for his 40-save effort in his teams 11-7 home win over Calgary, and Edmontons Brodie Merrill is transition player of the week for his work in the 18-14 Rush win over the Rock. The league is reviewing an incident in the Boston-Buffalo game in which the Bandits Brandon Francis was ejected following a fight in front of the Boston bench. Harold Baines Authentic Jersey . The Nets continued their winning ways Tuesday by sweeping a back-to-back set for the first time this season, beating the Orlando Magic 101-90 a night after routing the crosstown rival New York Knicks. Carlton Fisk Authentic Jersey . "It is my feeling the club is at a stage that is critical to our on-field expectations and this move was necessary," Hervey told a news gathering hours after he informed Reed he was gone after three years as head coach.LOS ANGELES - Faceoffs are as integral a part of Jonathan Toews game as his goal-scoring and play-making, and his quick hands paid off again for the Chicago Blackhawks. Toews scored the go-ahead goal in the second period after winning a faceoff from Mike Richards, helping the Blackhawks beat the Los Angeles Kings 2-1 on Saturday night. "Its one of those little things that players -- especially skilled players -- underestimate," said Toews, who won 11 of 20 faceoffs. "You want to start every play with the puck instead of chasing it, especially when youre playing against puck-possession teams like L.A. It makes a big difference when you win that draw and get possession right away. But I definitely didnt have an easy time against Mike Richards out there tonight." Toews, who came in leading the NHL with a 61.8 winning percentage on faceoffs, put Chicago ahead 2-1 with 3:22 left in the second on his 13th goal after beating Richards clean on the draw. The puck went back to Duncan Keith, whose long screened wrist shot went wide of the left post on a deflection off teammate Viktor Stalberg. But Toews was right there to get the hard carom off the end boards and slam it home behind Jonathan Quick, who stuck out his right leg too late. It was the second straight game-winner and fourth this season for the Blackhawks captain, who had two goals and three assists on Friday in a wild 6-5 win down the freeway against the Anaheim Ducks. "On that particular play, Taser won the draw real clean, and that gives me a little extra time to make a good play," Keith said. "As a defenceman, its important getting your head up and knowing when to shoot it. Its something we always try to work on. It was a nice play by Stally to get to the middle there and create traffic, and a good job by Taser to get the rebound." Andrew Brunette also scored for the Blackhawks and Keith had two assists. Corey Crawford, 4-0 with a 1.75 goals-against average in four career starts against the Kings, stopped 26 shots after making 23 saves against the Ducks. It was the first time he started on consecutive days since splitting a home-and-home set against the Dallas Stars to open the season. The Kings lost to the Blackhawks for the seventh straight time and fourth in a row at home. Quick had 25 saves and Jarret Stoll ended a 17-game goal drought. Richards career-best goal-scoring streak ended at five games. "We had our share of chances but we couldnt bear down," Anze Kopitar said. "A couple of times the puck was just laying around there and we couldnt quite get it in there. Its tough, but we cant feel sorry for ourselves. Theres no secret to it. You just have to get more shots on net. You have to keep it simple -- take the shot and not try to be too cute." Chicago, 9-0-1 when scoring first, got the jump on the Kings at 3:08 of the opening period. Brunette scored on a wraparound, as Quick tried to scramble around Kopitar and Blackhawks forward Dave Bolland in the crease to cover the right post. Robin Ventura White Sox Jersey. Chicago is 5-0 when Brunette scores a goal, and in four of those games he got their first one. The Blackhawks had a golden opportunity to make it 2-0 about eight minutes into the second period, as Stalberg and Patrick Kane flashed down the ice on a 2-on-none break. But Stalberg shot wide of the right post after getting Kanes cross-ice feed, and the opportunistic Kings tied it with 7:58 to go in the period. "That was a really good chance we had, but we didnt look at their goal as the one that could make the difference in the game and we didnt let it bother us," Toews said. "We knew it was going to come right down to the end, regardless of what happened in that second period." Matt Greenes shot from the right point was blocked by Keith, but the puck caromed to Stoll, and he beat Crawford high to the glove side with a 25-foot wrist shot for his first goal since Oct. 18. The Blackhawks were 3-3-0 on their annual circus road trip, which included a two-day stopover in Las Vegas. They wont play consecutive games on the road again until they go on a franchise record-tying nine-game trip that runs from Jan. 31 through Feb. 18 and spans four time zones. The only other nine-game trip in the franchises 85-year history was in 1955-56, when the NHL was comprised of just six teams -- all within a 987-mile radius. "For some of the guys who have been around here, were used to this trip," Keith said. "Obviously it was a long road trip and were excited to go home now. Were happy with the way we played the last three games, and its nice to finish the trip with a couple of wins and use that momentum and excitement when we get home." Notes: Chicago coach Joel Quenneville played his final nine NHL games for current Kings coach Terry Murray during the 1990-91 season, when Murray was coaching the Washington Capitals. ... Keith, who the Norris Trophy in 2010 as the leagues top defenceman, has been on the ice for 17 of the 21 goals scored against the Blackhawks in their last five games. He also leads the team in ice time per game. ... Kings C Colin Fraser helped the Blackhawks win a Stanley Cup in 2010 before he was traded to Edmonton for a draft pick just 15 days after the Cup clincher. ... This was the 27th time Chicago has played back-to-back road games against Kings and Ducks, and only the fourth time the Blackhawks have won both. It also happened in March 1994, February 1996, and last November. ... The Kings lost all four meetings with the Blackhawks last season, three of them by one-goal margins. Their next rendezvous will be Dec. 28 at Chicago, where Los Angeles hasnt won in six tries since Dec. 30, 2007. ... The Kings have not allowed a goal in 11 short-handed situations over their last three games, after giving up at least one in eight straight contests. ' ' '
